How many products can you market effectively?

Affiliate marketers, in general, seem to never be satisfied with the number of products they are marketing. I've seen marketers sign on for literally hundreds of products to represent and market and almost always come away with nothing to show for their efforts.

Why is this you may ask?

Isn't "the more the merrier" the right tack for us to pursue? Isn't it like throwing spaghetti on the wall to see how much of it sticks? Don't you increase your odds of selling something if you have a ton of stuff out there to be seen?

All tough questions to answer because they all have yes and no answers. But, if you add in monetary and human factors the answers all seem to shift towards NO NO NO!

Let's look at a simple example.

1) Don't you increase your odds of selling something if you have a ton of stuff out there to be seen?

The obvious answer is yes. More items in more places get more views and make more sales. It's the law of averages.

2) Now, add in the monetary factor.

More items equals more paid ads. If there is a limit to your finances, this equals fewer dollars to spend per item. This then equals lower quality website ad placement. Simply put, this means the less you pay for your ads, the fewer eyes will probably see them resulting in fewer sales and a lower ROI (return on your investment).

3) Next add in the human factor.

How much time you have to spend developing new ads, new products, etc. very rarely expands along with the number of products you decide to market. There are only so many hours in the day and unless you decide to increase your expenses by outsourcing the work or adding employees to handle it, you are going to run out of time! If you decide not to add expenses, the critical keyword research, optimization research and ad development time will be cut shorter and shorter until you start slacking on it and your ads stop pulling clicks.

So, how many products can you market effectively? I don't know. But you will if you analyze the parameters of money, time, product market and your required ROI. And always remember that no matter how much of the spaghetti sticks to the wall, eventually it all falls off and becomes a wasted resource. Simply put, it doesn't contribute to YOUR BOTTOM LINE!
